One Person Dies As Delta Govt Bulldozer Rams Into Tricycle In Warri

SAN FRANCISCO, April 09, (THEWILL) - Tragedy struck on Tuesday in Warri, Delta State, as a bulldozer belonging to the Delta State Government rammed into a tricycle, killing one person in the process.

The bulldozer was said to be on a mission to demolish illegal structures that have defaced Warri and its environs in the renewed plan by the state government to clear the city of its dirtiness.

The truck was said to have rammed into an oncoming tricycle at the Water Resources Junction, close to KeyStone Bank in Uvwie Local Government Area, killing one person and injuring several others.

The incident has generated much condemnation following the way and manners the Special Sanitation Team led by the state's deputy governor, Prof Amos Utuama, was going about the exercise.

Scores of residents on Monday groaned and wailed uncontrollably as the demolition bulldozer crushed their wares and property in an exercise meant to give Warri a facelift.

'The terrible incident happened at about 5: pm when a bulldozer on demolition exercise ran into a keke (tricycle).

"One person was crushed to death in the process, while three others were seriously injured.

"And as if that was not enough, soldiers started shooting to scare people.

It was a black day for all of us in Warri," a source said.

An official who confirmed the incident said; "One person was killed while two others were injured.

The injured have been rushed to the Warri Central Hospital.

" It could be recalled that the Delta State Government had recently constituted a 25-man Special Sanitation team led by the State's Deputy Governor, Professor Utuama to clean-up Warri, Uvwie and Udu Local Government Areas within one week.

The exercise kicked off on Monday with residents decrying the untold hardship the exercise has inflicted on them.

The exercise caused heavy gridlock in the metropolis as motorists were trapped and commuters stranded in many places.

Many traders who had structures along the road broke down in tears as their caravans and other make-shift shops were pulled down by the team.

Prof.
Utuama during the.
Inauguration of the exercise had warned residents and traders that it was not going to be business as usual.

He said the time to collectively clean up the three local government areas was now and therefore enjoined the people to cultivate a good sanitation habit or risk prosecution.
